It is estimated that around 10 percent of the UK’s population have dyslexia – that is approximately 6.3 million people.

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling. However, it is frequently a relief for a dyslexic person to understand why he or she is struggling at school when an assessment has been conducted.

Signs of dyslexia:

  • Reading and writing very slowly
  • Correctly reading a word and then failing to recognise it further down the page
  • Spelling words differently every time
  • Speech or language difficulties such as struggling to think of words to say
  • Taking longer to complete written work than others
  • Poor handwriting
  • Difficulty following and remembering instructions
  • Difficulties with motor skills such as using a knife and fork or swimming
  • Weak short term memory and a difficulty with processing language at speed
  • Lack of phonological awareness (ability to break down words and recognise separate units of sound and blend)
  • Having a family member with similar difficulties

A dyslexia assessment lasts up to three hours and ascertains whether an individual is dyslexic or not. The assessments I provide are suitable for ages 6 – adulthood, and are highly beneficial as individuals who present as dyslexic are granted extra time in exams if they achieve appropriate scores.

It can be useful for schools, universities and parents to have clarification, a learning profile and recommendations when dyslexia is suspected and sometimes in the case of tertiary education a Disabled Student Allowance can be applied for.

If you wish to book a dyslexia assessment for yourself or your child, please use my email address, Facebook account or contact form to get in touch.

My daughter has been tutored by Frances for the last 4 months and she recognised immediately that my daughter could have Dyslexia. This was confirmed by the assessment which was conducted in a calm and safe environment – the report was clear and easy to understand and Frances was happy to go through and answer any questions we had.”
