Dyscalculia is a learning difficulty experienced by 5 to 10% of the UK population. Not only can it affect an individual’s ability to acquire arithmetical skills, it may also cause difficulty with understanding simple number concepts. Furthermore, a pupil with dyscalculia may lack an intuitive grasp of numbers, have problems learning number facts and procedures, and suffer from an undermining of self-esteem and confidence.
Signs of dyscalculia may include difficulty with:
- Recalling times tables
- Understanding money and working out change
- Fluency and speed using maths operations
- Counting backwards
- Mental maths
The assessment involves a 1.5 hour session and is undertaken after the dyslexia assessment (if needed). It involves an individual being comprehensively assessed with appropriate dyscalculia tests. Standard Scores below 85 for maths fluency subtests will enable candidates to be granted extra time in maths exams and the report will include explanations of the specific tests, recommended books and useful recommendations.
